‘I don’t want to die on the sales floor’: I’m 67 and earn $19.50 an hour at a big-box store. When can I finally retire?

STOP STOP I HAVE TO SAY THIS FIRST THIS WORKER IS LITERALLY SIXTY-SEVEN YEARS OLD MAKING NINETEEN DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS AN HOUR AT A BIG-BOX STORE AND THEY WROTE TO MARKETWATCH SAYING I DO NOT WANT TO DIE ON THE SALES FLOOR WHICH BROKE MY HEART INTO PIECES MAN AND THE THING IS THEY ARE ASKING WHEN THEY CAN ACTUALLY RETIRE BECAUSE FROM A FINANCIAL PORTFOLIO STANDPOINT THEY STARTED DRAWING SOCIAL SECURITY AT SIXTY-SIX AND GET TWENTY-FOUR HUNDRED AND TEN DOLLARS EVERY SINGLE MONTH AND THEY ALSO HAVE TWO HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS SITTING IN A FOUR-OH-ONE-K WHICH SOUNDS LIKE SIZABLE ASSETS TO ME PERSONALLY BUT THEY STILL DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS SAFE TO WALK AWAY AND QUIT THEIR SHIFT FOREVER WHICH MEANS THEY ARE STILL OUT THERE WORKING RIGHT NOW. ANYWAY DO NOT QUOTE ME ON ANY OF THAT.

A 67-year-old big-box store worker earning $19.50 an hour asked MarketWatch when they can retire, noting they have $214,000 in a 401(k) and receive $2,410 monthly from Social Security.
